DESCRIPTION
If you played Ace Fishing: Wild Catch back in the day, you already know Com2uS can make a fishing game that feels good. Wild Catch pulled in over 70 million downloads and for good reason. Ace Fishing: Crew is the sequel, and instead of just reskinning the original, the developers rebuilt it from the ground up with underwater exploration, a crew system, and some seriously overhauled 3D visuals. The result is one of the better looking fishing games on mobile, period.
What separates Crew from the dozens of other fishing games out there is the underwater angle. You are not just staring at a bobber on the surface waiting for a bite. You cast your line and follow it down beneath the waves, watching fish react in real time in fully rendered 3D environments. Locations range from Hawaii and the Amazon to Minnetonka and the Mariana Trench, each with their own set of species and conditions. The fish themselves move and behave with a level of detail that actually makes you feel like you are watching something alive. It sounds like a small thing but it changes the whole vibe compared to surface-only fishing games.
The controls are where things really click. Com2uS stripped the mechanics down to work smoothly with one hand. Casting, hooking, and reeling all feel intuitive and responsive. There is a haptic feedback system that simulates the resistance of the fish pulling on the line, which adds a surprising amount of immersion for a phone game. You need to time your rod movements based on how the fish is fighting, and landing a big catch actually feels earned rather than just tapping a button at the right time.
The “Crew” part of the title refers to the RPG layer they added on top of the fishing. You assemble a team of crew members, each with unique traits and abilities, and bring them along on your trips. Different crew combinations offer different bonuses depending on the region and fish type you are targeting. It gives you a reason to keep collecting characters and experimenting with team setups, which adds more depth than you would expect from a fishing game.
Content wise there is a good amount here. Multiple regions to unlock, daily challenges, events, tournaments, and a progression system tied to both your gear and your crew. The game keeps handing you free crew cards, equipment cards, and login rewards at a steady pace, so free players can make real progress without feeling locked out. One long time player mentioned reaching the later Amazon stages without spending a dime.
The catch, and there is always a catch with free to play, is that the premium options are expensive. Really expensive. The in app purchase prices sit at the high end, and while the game does not force you to spend, the temptation is definitely built into the design. Some players who crossed over from Wild Catch also felt burned by changes to core mechanics in updates, though Crew has been more stable in that regard so far.
The one real controversy was an update that shifted some of the gameplay from underwater back to surface fishing, which annoyed players who specifically chose Crew for the underwater experience. It was a strange move that felt like a step backward from what made the sequel unique.
If you are into fishing games at all, Ace Fishing: Crew is easily one of the top picks on mobile. The underwater visuals, tight controls, and crew RPG system make it stand out from a crowded genre. Just keep your wallet closed unless you are sure you want to commit.
