Camp Buddy has been around since 2018 and there is a reason it is still talked about years later. Developed by BLits Games and originally funded through a very successful Patreon campaign, this visual novel set the bar for what a BL game could be in terms of quality, content, and overall production value.

You play as Keitaro Nagame, a pretty regular guy who ends up at a scout-themed summer camp called Camp Buddy. He is there with his childhood friend Hiro, who signed him up hoping to spend more time together. Once at camp, Keitaro meets a bunch of other campers and each one of them has their own personality and backstory. There is Yoichi, the rough around the edges loner type who acts tough but clearly has a softer side. Hunter is a quiet, artsy bookworm who has been homeschooled his whole life and is just trying to make real friends for the first time. Natsumi is the reliable older camper who everyone looks up to but has his own personal struggles going on behind the scenes. And then there is Hiro himself, who has been hiding feelings for Keitaro since they were kids.

The main plot revolves around saving the camp from being shut down, and depending on which character route you pick, the way that plays out changes completely. Your choices throughout the story actually matter and affect how things unfold, which gives the game a ton of replay value. Each character route runs about 15 hours on average, and that is just for one ending. There are multiple endings per route so you can easily spend 60 plus hours if you want to see everything.
What really makes Camp Buddy stand out is the writing. It knows when to be funny, when to be emotional, and when to just let the characters breathe and be themselves. The relationships feel earned and not rushed. You actually get to know these characters before things develop between them, which makes it all feel more genuine. The conflicts each character deals with on their route are unique and personal, so no two playthroughs feel the same.

The artwork is beautiful with vibrant colors that nail the summer camp atmosphere. There are over 150 unlockable CG sets plus a ton of portrait images and backgrounds. The soundtrack is solid too and was later remastered for an even better experience. Mini games are sprinkled throughout to break up the reading, which is a nice touch that keeps things from getting stale.
Built on the Ren’Py engine, Camp Buddy really pushes what that engine can do. The developers clearly put a lot of love into this project and it shows in every part of the game. If you are into visual novels and want something with real character depth, great art, and a story that actually makes you care, Camp Buddy is hard to beat. It also spawned a sequel called Scoutmaster Season, which says a lot about how well received the original was.
