DESCRIPTION

This one hurts to write about because Marvel Future Revolution was genuinely impressive for a mobile game, and it is gone now. Netmarble shut it down on August 25th, 2023, exactly two years after launch. If you missed it, here is what you missed.

Future Revolution was Marvel’s first open world action RPG on mobile, and it looked like it had no business running on a phone. The graphics were closer to console quality than anything else in the Marvel mobile lineup. Character models were detailed, environments were large and varied, and the whole thing ran at a smooth frame rate on decent hardware. Reviewers compared it to Marvel’s Avengers on console, and while it obviously was not at that level, the fact that the comparison even came up says a lot about what Netmarble pulled off.

The story was built around the Secret Wars concept. Multiple Earths from across the multiverse collide and merge into one “Primary Earth,” creating a patchwork world with zones like New Stark City, the Hydra Empire, Sakaar, Midgardia, and Xandearth. You played as a member of Omega Flight, a new superhero task force assembled to deal with the chaos. The writing was handled by Marc Sumerak, a veteran Marvel comics writer, and the voice acting for main characters was solid. It was one of those rare mobile games where the story actually felt worth following.

You could play as eight heroes at launch including Spider-Man, Captain America, Iron Man, Black Widow, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Storm, and Star-Lord. Combat was hack-and-slash style with each hero having unique abilities on cooldown timers. It was fun and flashy, though the touch controls could feel cramped on smaller screens. An autoplay option helped during grindier sections. The costume system was a standout with over 400 million customization combinations across mix-and-match outfit pieces for each hero, and dressing up your Spider-Man in some wild comic accurate deep cut costume was more fun than it had any right to be.

So why did it die? The usual mobile game problems, amplified. Microtransactions were aggressive even by mobile standards. The endgame got repetitive fast. Netmarble announced a reduced scale of service in October 2022, barely a year after launch, and by June 2023 they pulled the plug entirely. The player base just was not spending enough to justify the clearly massive development costs.

It is a shame because the foundation was great. If Netmarble had launched it as a premium title or found a less predatory monetization model, Future Revolution could have had a real legacy. Instead it is just another dead live service game. If you see it listed anywhere, know that it no longer works. The servers are off.
