Your citizens have needs and opinions, and keeping them happy is what keeps your tax revenue flowing and your city expanding. You also deal with real city problems like traffic, pollution, and crime which adds a nice layer of strategy to the whole thing.

The graphics are honestly impressive for a mobile game. Buildings are detailed, the city looks alive with moving cars and tiny citizens going about their day, and the different themed regions like Sunny Isles and Frosty Fjords give your city a lot of visual variety. You can zoom in close and actually appreciate the detail they put into the design. It runs smoothly on most devices though it can be a bit of a battery killer during longer sessions.

Controls are intuitive and feel natural on a touchscreen. Placing and moving buildings is simple, navigating around your city is smooth, and the menus are well organized. There is a tutorial that eases you into things without being overwhelming, and new features unlock gradually as you level up so you are not drowning in complexity from the start.

Now here is where it gets tricky. SimCity BuildIt is a free to play game and it leans hard into that model. Upgrading buildings requires crafting specific items in your factories and commercial buildings, and some of those items take a long time to produce. Your storage is limited, expansion materials are hard to come by, and the higher you level up the more grinding is involved. The game is basically designed around short daily play sessions with built in waiting times between actions.

You can absolutely play without spending a dime and still have a great time. Many long time players actually recommend not spending money because it removes the strategy element of managing your resources and time. But the game does push in app purchases pretty regularly with pop ups and special deals. The premium currency is expensive for what you get, and some seasonal content is locked behind the Mayor’s Pass which costs real money.

The seasonal content is one of the stronger parts of the game though. EA regularly rolls out themed seasons with unique buildings and events. Recent ones have included Cyberpunk, Historical Norway, Hawaii, and even a NASA Artemis II Mission theme. There are also Contest of Mayors competitions and design challenges that let you show off your creativity against other players.
If you enjoy city building games and want something you can pick up for a few minutes each day, SimCity BuildIt is hard to beat on mobile. Just go in knowing it is a slow burn and not something you are going to binge for hours at a time.
